Saket Gokhale used the amount received from the donation for personal expenses: ED


Trinamool Congress spokesperson Saket Gokhale in ED Custody: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday claimed that Trinamool Congress (TMC) spokesperson Saket Gokhale allegedly spent over Rs 1.07 crore collected through donations on electioneering, food and personal expenses. It also includes a cash amount of over Rs 23 lakh received from a close aide of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

The ED made these allegations in its ‘remand note’ submitted to a local court here after arresting 35-year-old Gokhale from Sabarmati Jail. Officials said that Gokhale was produced before an Ahmedabad court, from where he has been sent to ED custody till January 31.

Court rejected bail plea

The Gujarat police arrested Gokhale from Delhi in December for allegedly misappropriating funds collected through donations. The Gujarat High Court had on Monday refused regular bail to Gokhale in the case and asked him to approach the court only after the chargesheet was filed.

The matter of personal use of money told in the inquiry

The ED told the court that Gokhale allegedly created a fake electronic document named “ourdemocracy.in” in the name of an organization, through which he sent money to the complainant through a private company named “GiantTreeTech Pvt Ltd”. And collected small and big amount from other persons. The ED told the court that this amount was used for personal expenses.

The donation was received from a close aide of Rahul Gandhi

The agency informed the court that when Gokhale was asked about Rs 23.54 lakh deposited in his bank account over a period of one year, Gokhale in his statement to the ED said, “Social media related work and other This amount was given in cash on behalf of Alankar Sawai of Congress for consultancy. Sawai, a former banker, is said to be a close aide of former Congress President Rahul Gandhi and heads his research team.
